3. Seta

  1. Connect the ESI M4U eX to your computer using the provided USB 3.0 cable. The device is class-compliant, meaning it should be recognized automatically by Windows and macOS without additional drivers for basic functionality.
  2. For standalone operation or if your computer's USB port does not provide sufficient power, connect the included DC 5V power adapter to the rear panel.
  3. Connect your MIDI devices (keyboards, controllers, synthesizers) to the MIDI ports on the front and rear panels. The M4U eX automatically detects whether a port is used as an input or an output, indicated by the colored LEDs.
  4. If using the integrated USB hub, connect your USB MIDI controllers or other USB peripherals to the three USB 3.0 ports on the rear panel.

3.2 Driver Installation (Optional for Windows)

While the M4U eX is class-compliant, an optional ESI MIDI Port driver is available for Windows users. This driver provides enhanced features for complex multi-device and multi-client operations. To install:

The M4U eX can operate without a computer, acting as a standalone MIDI router and merger. This is ideal for live setups or when you need to connect multiple MIDI devices directly.

  1. Ensure the M4U eX is powered via the DC 5V adapter.
  2. Use the "Mode" button on the front panel to cycle through different routing and merging presets. The "Status" LED will change to indicate the active mode. Refer to the full product manual for detailed descriptions of each preset.
  3. Connect your MIDI devices according to the desired routing. For example, you can merge multiple MIDI inputs into a single output or split one input to multiple outputs.

4.3 Using the Integrated USB Hub

The three USB 3.0 ports on the rear panel function as a standard USB hub. You can connect USB MIDI controllers, external hard drives, or other USB peripherals. When connected to a computer, these devices will be accessible through the M4U eX.

4.4 Software Integration

When connected to a computer, the M4U eX will appear as multiple MIDI input and output devices in your Digital Audio Workstation (DAW) or other music software. Select the appropriate MIDI ports for your tracks and instruments.

For Windows users with the optional ESI MIDI Port driver, you may have access to a control panel or utility for advanced routing, filtering, and configuration of MIDI messages.
